3 Great Reasons to Install a Home EV Charge Point (with Video)

Most people with an electric car still rely on public chargers more than they’d like. Here are three reasons a home charge point changes that.

1. You charge overnight, not on someone else’s schedule

Plug in when you get home, wake up with a full charge. That’s it. No detours, no waiting, no hunting for a working bay. For most people, this alone is worth the installation cost — you just stop thinking about charging altogether.

2. Home charging is considerably cheaper

Public rapid chargers have become expensive — often 50p to 80p per kWh. Charging at home on a standard tariff is typically a quarter of that, and on a time-of-use tariff like Octopus Go (which gives cheaper electricity overnight), the saving is even bigger. Over the course of a year, that difference adds up to hundreds of pounds for most drivers.

3. A dedicated charge point is faster and smarter than a three-pin socket

Some people use a standard plug to charge their car. It works, but it’s slow (typically 6-8 miles of range per hour) and not really designed for regular overnight use. A dedicated 7kW home charger gives you around 30 miles per hour of charge, handles load balancing, and usually comes with an app so you can schedule charging around your tariff. It’s a much better setup for day-to-day use.
