We recently carried out EV charger fault finding at a commercial site in Aztec West, Bradley Stoke, resolving an issue with an existing Rolec EV charge point.
Faults with EV chargers can be caused by a range of issues, from supply problems to internal component faults, and require proper testing to diagnose safely.

How EV Charger Fault Finding Works
Diagnosing a fault in an EV charger requires a systematic approach — working through the supply, the protective devices, the charger’s control systems and, where accessible, the internal components. It’s not enough to swap parts and hope for the best; proper fault finding identifies the root cause so the right repair can be made first time.
Common causes of EV charger failure include supply issues (such as a tripped RCBO or MCB), communication faults between the charger and vehicle, internal component failure, or deterioration of the tethered cable and connector assembly.
What We Found
We were called to the commercial site at Aztec West to diagnose a fault on an existing Rolec EV charge point that had stopped operating correctly and was unable to initiate a charge session.
- Checked incoming supply voltage and protective devices
- Tested charger control systems and communication signals
- Inspected internal components of the Rolec unit
- Fault identified and reported with recommended remedial action
Once the fault was diagnosed, we provided the client with a clear explanation of the issue and the options available to restore the charger to full working order.
When to Call an Electrician for an EV Charger Fault
It’s worth calling an electrician if your EV charger won’t initiate a charge session, trips the supply when a vehicle is connected, shows a persistent fault or error code, charges intermittently, or is making unusual sounds. Some issues — such as a tripped protective device or a supply problem — can be straightforward to resolve. Others, such as internal component failure, may require the unit to be replaced.
Attempting to open or repair a charger without the right training and equipment is unsafe and will typically void the manufacturer’s warranty. If in doubt, always call a qualified electrician.
