Searching for an electrician online throws up a lot of results, and not all of them are equally reliable. Here’s what’s actually worth looking at when you’re deciding who to use.

Check they’re registered
In the UK, electricians carrying out notifiable work (things like new circuits, consumer unit replacements, and most outdoor installations) need to be registered with a competent persons scheme such as NICEIC or NAPIT. This isn’t just a quality indicator — it’s how the work gets certified and signed off under Part P of the Building Regulations. An unregistered electrician can’t certify their own work, which creates problems when you come to sell or insure the property.
Look at their reviews
Google reviews are the most reliable indicator. Look at the volume as well as the score — a company with 100 reviews averaging 4.9 stars tells you more than one with three reviews at 5 stars. It’s also worth reading the negative ones if there are any, to see how the company responded.
Make sure they do the type of work you need
Not every electrician does everything. Some focus mainly on commercial work; others do solar and EV chargers; some are generalists. If you need a specific job done — an EICR, an EV charger, a solar installation, or fault finding — check that the company you’re calling actually does that work regularly.
Get a clear quote
A reputable electrician will give you a written quote before the work starts, not a vague figure over the phone. If someone is reluctant to put a price in writing, that’s worth noting.
