Outdoor Lighting Installation at Almondsbury Church (Buttress Lights)

ABOUT THE PROJECT
Outdoor Lighting Installation at Almondsbury Church (Buttress Lights)

We recently completed an outdoor lighting installation at Almondsbury Church, replacing the existing fittings on the stone buttresses with new, energy-efficient LED lighting.

Lighting a listed or historic building requires careful consideration — the fittings need to be sympathetic to the architecture while providing reliable, long-lasting performance in an exposed outdoor environment.

Outdoor lighting installation at Almondsbury Church — replacement LED fittings on stone buttresses

About the Installation

The existing buttress lights at Almondsbury Church had reached the end of their service life and were due for replacement. Buttress-mounted fittings are particularly exposed to the elements — subject to wind, rain and temperature cycling throughout the year — so the replacement units needed to be robust, well-sealed and appropriately rated for their position on the building.

The installation also needed to be carried out carefully to minimise any impact on the stonework, with cable routes and fixings kept as discreet as possible in keeping with the character of the building.

What We Installed

We replaced the existing fittings on each buttress with new LED units, reusing the existing cable infrastructure where possible to minimise disruption to the building fabric.

  • New LED fittings installed to each buttress position
  • IP65-rated units for fully weatherproof outdoor performance
  • Existing wiring infrastructure reused where sound
  • Fixings and cable dressing kept sympathetic to the stonework
  • Fully tested and signed off on completion

Lighting Historic and Listed Buildings

Churches and historic buildings present unique challenges for electrical work. Access to high-level positions often requires specialist equipment, and any work affecting the fabric of a listed building may require faculty consent or listed building consent depending on the nature of the work and the requirements of the diocese or local authority.

The choice of fitting is also important. For a church setting, the colour temperature of the LED source affects how the building reads at night — warmer white tones (around 2700–3000K) tend to complement natural stone more effectively than cooler, bluer light, which can look harsh against traditional materials.
