We were called to a commercial premises in Bradley Stoke, South Gloucestershire, to investigate an electrical fault that had been causing problems on site. After a systematic investigation we traced the fault to a loose connection on the neutral bar inside the consumer unit — the kind of fault that can be tricky to find but is important to resolve quickly once it is.
The faulty connection was replaced, the consumer unit inspected for any further issues, and the circuits retested before we left to confirm everything was operating correctly.

What We Found
The neutral bar inside a consumer unit is the point where the neutral conductors from all the individual circuits terminate. A loose connection at this bar means that one or more circuits don’t have a reliable return path for current — which can cause a range of symptoms depending on how loose the connection is and which circuits are affected. In this case the fault was producing intermittent behaviour that hadn’t yet caused a full circuit failure, but left unattended it would have.
Loose neutral connections are worth taking seriously. A high-resistance connection generates heat, and a neutral bar that’s allowed to arc or overheat inside a consumer unit creates a genuine fire risk. The symptoms can be subtle — flickering lights, appliances behaving oddly, voltage readings that don’t look quite right — which is why methodical testing rather than guesswork is the right approach.
How We Traced It
Fault finding on a commercial installation starts with understanding the symptoms and ruling out the obvious causes. Once we’d established that the issue wasn’t a tripped device or a failed piece of equipment, we moved to testing at the consumer unit itself. Checking neutral integrity — including the terminations at the neutral bar — is a standard part of that process, and in this case it’s where the fault revealed itself.
Once the fault was located, the defective connection was replaced rather than simply tightened — a loose neutral bar connection that has been arcing or running hot can damage the terminal itself, so replacement is the right call. The surrounding terminations were checked, the board inspected visually for any signs of heat damage, and everything was tested before being put back into service.
