How Much Does an EV Charger Cost to Install in Bristol?

If you’re weighing up a home EV charger, cost is usually the first question. The honest answer is that it depends on your property, but most Bristol homeowners can expect to pay somewhere between ยฃ800 and ยฃ1,400 for a standard installation, including the unit, labour and certification. Here’s what goes into that figure and where the price can move up or down.

Typical cost breakdown

A standard 7kW charger installed on an existing consumer unit, with a straightforward cable run from the fuse board to an off-street parking space, typically costs ยฃ800โ€“ยฃ1,100 fitted. This covers the charger unit itself, the cable run, a dedicated circuit breaker, earthing arrangements, and the certification you need for building control notification.

Where the cable run is longer, needs to cross a driveway, or requires chasing into brickwork, expect the price to move up towards ยฃ1,200โ€“ยฃ1,600. Our guide on what size EV charger you actually need is worth reading before you get quotes, since 7kW is right for most homes and paying for a higher-output unit rarely makes sense on a single-phase domestic supply.

What affects the price

A few things push the cost up or down:

Consumer unit condition. Older fuse boards, particularly ones without RCD protection or with limited spare ways, sometimes need attention before a charger can be safely added. It’s worth reading whether your consumer unit needs replacing first, since this is one of the most common reasons a quote comes in higher than expected.

Cable route. A charger fitted close to the consumer unit on an external wall is the cheapest option. Anything requiring underground ducting, longer surface runs, or working around existing pipework adds labour time.

Tethered vs untethered. Tethered chargers with a built-in cable tend to cost slightly more than untethered units, though the difference is usually under ยฃ100.

Load management or solar integration. If you want the charger to work alongside solar panels or a battery, or need load balancing because your supply is already close to capacity, this adds to both the equipment and labour cost.

Are there grants available?

The general homeowner grant that used to cover EV chargers has been scaled back, but support still exists for specific groups, including renters, flat owners and some landlords. It’s worth checking current eligibility on the government’s zero-emission vehicles page before booking an installation, since funding rules change fairly often.

Don’t forget certification

A proper EV charger installation is notifiable work under Part P and needs to be certified once complete. This isn’t optional extra paperwork, it’s what confirms the installation is safe and compliant, and you’ll need it if you ever sell the property or claim on insurance. Before booking anyone, it’s worth knowing how to check an electrician is properly qualified โ€” a cheaper quote from an unregistered installer can end up costing more if the work needs redoing.

You can also search the NICEIC Find a Contractor directory to confirm a company’s registration before you commit.

What’s included in our quotes

When we quote for an EV charger installation, the price covers a site survey, the unit, all labour and materials, the necessary certification, and building control notification. If your consumer unit needs attention first, we’ll flag that at the survey stage rather than leaving it as a surprise. For a fuller walkthrough of the process, see our complete guide to EV charger installation.

If you’d like a fixed quote for your property, get in touch and we’ll arrange a survey. We install across Bristol and South Gloucestershire and can usually get an installation booked in within a couple of weeks.
