In most cases, yes — you can have a consumer unit replacement without a full rewire. Whether you need one depends on the condition of the existing wiring, which is why we always carry out an EICR inspection before replacing a consumer unit.

Why the wiring condition matters
A modern consumer unit has significantly better protection than an older fuse box — it monitors circuits more carefully and will trip on faults that older units would let pass. That’s a good thing, but it does mean that when you install a new unit into an ageing system, it sometimes starts tripping on faults that were always there but never detected. This can catch people off guard and lead them to think the new unit is faulty, when actually it’s doing its job correctly.
The inspection before the replacement helps identify any of these pre-existing issues so there are no surprises. If there are serious faults in the wiring, we’ll tell you before we start and discuss your options.
What we do
We carry out the EICR first to understand what we’re working with. If the wiring is in reasonable condition, we replace the consumer unit and certify the work. If the inspection reveals faults, we’ll talk you through what needs addressing — whether that’s targeted repairs alongside the replacement, or, if the wiring is genuinely life-expired, a conversation about what a full rewire would involve.
Signs your electrics might need attention
Worth getting looked at if you have: circuit breakers tripping regularly, sockets or switches that are warm to the touch, scorch marks around outlets, flickering lights, or wiring that you know is more than 25–30 years old. An inspection will tell you where things actually stand.
We carry out consumer unit replacements across Bristol and South Gloucestershire. Contact us to book an inspection and we’ll give you a clear picture of what’s needed.
