Electrical Fault Finding in Westbury-on-Trym

ABOUT THE PROJECT
Electrical Fault Finding in Westbury-on-Trym

We were called out to a property in Westbury-on-Trym, Bristol, where the homeowner had noticed a circuit had stopped working. Rather than guess at the cause, we carried out a systematic fault finding investigation to identify the root of the problem before carrying out any repair work.

Electrical faults can have a number of causes — from a failed accessory or damaged cable to a deteriorating connection or a tripped protective device that won’t reset. Our approach is always to test and trace before touching, so we understand exactly what we’re dealing with before making any repairs.

Diagnosing the Fault

Fault finding starts with understanding the symptoms. We begin with a visual inspection and a series of tests — checking insulation resistance, continuity and polarity — to narrow down the location of the fault to a specific circuit or section of wiring. This methodical approach avoids unnecessary disruption and means we’re not replacing parts that don’t need replacing.

Modern test equipment allows us to pinpoint faults that would otherwise be invisible — a high-resistance connection hidden inside a junction box, a cable nicked during a previous installation, or an accessory that’s failed internally. Once we’ve identified the cause, we can give a clear explanation and a fixed-price repair.

What We Found

After testing, we identified the fault and carried out the repair on the same visit. The circuit was tested again once the repair was complete to confirm it was functioning correctly and safely before we left the property.

Tracing Electrical Faults Safely

It’s tempting to reset a tripping breaker repeatedly or swap out accessories in the hope of finding the problem — but this can mask a more serious underlying fault and in some cases cause damage to appliances or the wiring itself. A proper fault finding visit gives you a definitive answer rather than a temporary fix.

If a fault keeps recurring after being “fixed,” that’s usually a sign the root cause hasn’t been found. Intermittent faults — ones that come and go — can be the trickiest to trace, but systematic testing nearly always turns them up. We always test after repair to confirm the issue is fully resolved.
