If you’ve been looking for an electrician, you’ve probably seen the NICEIC logo on websites and vans. Here’s what it actually means.

What does NICEIC stand for?
NICEIC stands for the National Inspection Council for Electrical Installation Contracting. It’s been around for over 60 years and is one of the UK’s main regulatory bodies for electrical contractors. Being NICEIC-approved means the company has been assessed against strict industry standards and is regularly reassessed to make sure they’re still meeting them.
Why it matters
NICEIC registration isn’t a legal requirement for all electrical work, but for notifiable work under Part P of the Building Regulations — which covers most domestic electrical installation — the electrician needs to be registered with a recognised Competent Person Scheme. NICEIC is one of the most well-regarded of these schemes.
It also means your work comes with a Platinum Promise: if something goes wrong and the contractor can’t resolve it, NICEIC may step in to put it right, up to £25,000 per installation.
How to check
Go to the NICEIC website and use the Find a Contractor tool. You can search by postcode or company name. Any legitimate NICEIC-registered contractor will appear there.
For landlords
Using a NICEIC-approved contractor for your EICR means the inspection is carried out by someone whose work is regularly checked — which matters when you’re legally responsible for electrical safety in a rented property.
