How Much Does It Cost To Get Solar Panels in Bristol?

Solar panel costs vary quite a bit depending on what you’re trying to achieve, so rather than giving a single figure, here’s a breakdown of what actually affects the price.

System size

This is the biggest variable. A smaller 3kW system for a modest home typically costs around £4,000–£6,000. A 4kW system — which suits most three-bedroom houses — tends to fall in the £6,000–£8,000 range. Larger 6kW systems for bigger properties or higher energy users can be £8,000–£12,000. These are rough guides; every property is different.

Battery storage

Adding a battery is increasingly popular because it lets you store excess generation for evenings and cloudy days. It typically adds £3,000–£7,000 to the total cost, depending on capacity. Whether it’s worth it depends on your usage patterns — if you’re out during the day and use most of your electricity in the evenings, the payback period can be quite short. See our guide to whether you need a battery with solar panels for a fuller breakdown.

Panel quality and installation complexity

Higher-efficiency panels cost a bit more upfront but tend to perform better over the system’s lifetime, particularly on roofs that aren’t perfectly south-facing. Installation complexity — roof type, access, how far the cabling needs to run — also affects the price. A good installer will survey the property properly and be upfront about anything that adds to the cost.

What you get back

Most homeowners in Bristol see their electricity bills drop noticeably, especially if they shift energy-heavy tasks (dishwasher, washing machine, EV charging) to daytime. The Smart Export Guarantee means you also get paid for any electricity you export to the grid. And there’s an increasing body of evidence that solar adds value to a property at resale. If you have an EV, solar and home charging work particularly well together — see our guide on charging your electric car using solar panels.

We’re based in Bristol and install solar across the city and South Gloucestershire. If you want a proper quote rather than ballpark figures, get in touch and we’ll come out and take a look. You can also browse our case studies to see the kind of work we do.
