Looking for an Electrician for Your Garden Office?

You’ve got the space โ€” now it needs power you can actually rely on. Whether your garden office is already built or still being planned, we carry out garden office electrical installations across Bristol and South Gloucestershire โ€” armoured cable, dedicated circuits, sockets, lighting, heating and data โ€” done properly from the outset.

Garden office electrics done properly

An extension lead running from the back door is fine for a weekend in the garden. It’s not fine for a full working day, five days a week, with a computer, monitor, router, lighting and a fan heater all running off the same socket.

A proper garden office electrical installation gives you a dedicated circuit from your consumer unit โ€” via correctly buried armoured cable โ€” to a sub-consumer unit or fused spur in the building itself. From there you get proper sockets, lighting circuits and heating connections, all tested and certified to BS 7671.

It’s not significantly more expensive than a bodged solution โ€” and it’s the difference between a space you can work in comfortably and safely, and one that trips your RCD every time you switch the kettle on.

What we install in garden offices across Bristol

Armoured cable from house to outbuilding The backbone of any garden office installation. We run steel wire armoured (SWA) cable from your consumer unit, buried at the correct depth โ€” 450mm under a lawn, 600mm under a path or driveway โ€” or surface-run in appropriate conduit where burial isn’t possible. No flex, no extension leads, no shortcuts.

Sub-consumer unit or fused spur For a proper garden office installation, a small sub-consumer unit in the outbuilding gives you individual circuit protection for sockets, lighting and heating โ€” meaning a fault on one circuit doesn’t take everything else out. For simpler setups, a fused spur is sometimes sufficient. We’ll advise the right approach for your specific building and usage.

Sockets and USB outlets We install the right number of sockets for how you’ll actually use the space โ€” not just one double socket in the corner. For a full working setup we typically install four to six double sockets plus a USB outlet, positioned to suit your desk layout and equipment.

Lighting circuits LED downlights, strip lighting or pendant fittings โ€” we install and connect interior lighting that works for a working environment, not just a garden shed. Good lighting in a garden office makes a real difference to how comfortable it is to work in long term.

Heating connections If your garden office has electric heating โ€” panel heaters, underfloor heating or a fixed convector โ€” we’ll wire it properly on its own dedicated circuit with a thermostat connection. Electric heating on a shared socket circuit is undersized and unsafe for long-term use.

Data and internet cabling We install Cat6 ethernet cabling from your router to your garden office for a fast, reliable wired connection โ€” far more dependable than Wi-Fi through a garden wall, especially if your office is at the far end of the garden. We run the data cable alongside the armoured cable in the same trench where possible.

Outdoor lighting and security lights Motion-sensor security lighting for the path to your garden office, exterior lighting above the door, or feature lighting around the building โ€” we can include all of this as part of the installation rather than as a separate job.

EV charger integration If your garden office is near your driveway or parking area, this is often a good opportunity to add an EV charger at the same time โ€” sharing the cable run and groundworks to keep costs down. We install Zappi and Sync EV chargers across Bristol and South Gloucestershire.

"We had LA Electrical wire up our garden office and couldn't be happier. Proper armoured cable, a small consumer unit in the office, plenty of sockets and Cat6 for internet. The cable run is buried and you'd never know it was there. Really tidy, professional job."

James, Thornbury

What to think about before we arrive

Getting the timing right makes a big difference to the overall cost and disruption of a garden office electrical installation. Here’s what we’d ask you to consider:

Is the building already in place? Ideally we’d install the cable run before the garden office is positioned โ€” it’s easier to route the cable where it needs to go without working around an existing structure. If the building is already in place, it’s not a problem, just worth knowing.

Where does the cable need to run? The route from your consumer unit to the outbuilding determines the complexity and cost of the job. A straightforward run across a lawn is very different to routing under a patio, through a wall and across a driveway. A site visit lets us plan the most practical route.

What will you use the space for? A home office with a laptop and monitor needs a different setup to a workshop with power tools, or a home gym with electric heating and a treadmill. Knowing your usage lets us size the cable and consumer unit correctly.

Do you need planning permission? In most cases no โ€” a garden office on a domestic property falls under permitted development. There are exceptions for listed buildings and conservation areas. Building regulations may apply depending on the size of the structure โ€” we’ll flag anything relevant before we start.

FAQ

How much does a garden office electrical installation cost?

It depends on the length of the cable run, the complexity of the route and what you need inside the building. As a rough guide: a simple installation with a short cable run, fused spur, a couple of sockets and basic lighting starts from around ยฃ500โ€“ยฃ700. A standard installation with a longer run, sub-consumer unit, four to six sockets, lighting and heating connection typically costs ยฃ800โ€“ยฃ1,200. A full installation with complex routing, data cabling, exterior lighting and heating circuits can run from ยฃ1,200 upwards. We always provide a fixed price before we start โ€” get in touch for an accurate quote based on your specific setup.

Yes โ€” any new circuit from your consumer unit, including garden office power, is notifiable electrical work under Part P of the Building Regulations. It must be carried out by a registered electrician who can self-certify the work. We’re NICEIC Approved Contractors so all our work is fully compliant and certified without needing to involve building control.

We use steel wire armoured (SWA) cable for all underground runs โ€” buried at 450mm under a lawn or 600mm under a path or driveway. We don’t use standard twin and earth outside โ€” it isn’t suitable for underground installation and it’s not safe long term. For surface runs we use appropriate conduit with correctly rated cable inside.

For a full working setup โ€” with sockets, lighting and heating on separate circuits โ€” yes, a sub-consumer unit is the right approach. It gives each circuit individual protection so a fault on one doesn’t affect the others. For very simple setups a fused spur may be sufficient. We’ll advise the right approach when we quote.

Yes โ€” we install Cat6 ethernet cabling alongside the armoured cable in the same trench where possible. A wired internet connection is significantly more reliable than Wi-Fi through a garden wall, particularly for video calls and large file transfers. We’d always recommend including it at installation stage rather than adding it later.

Yes โ€” if your garden office is near your parking area, this is often a good opportunity to add an EV charger. We can share the cable trench and groundworks, which keeps costs down compared to two separate jobs. We install Zappi and Sync EV chargers across Bristol and South Gloucestershire.

Most standard garden office installations take one day. More complex installations โ€” longer cable runs, multiple circuits, data cabling and exterior lighting โ€” may take a day and a half to two days. We’ll give you an accurate timescale when we quote.

For installations where the cable needs to be buried, you have two options โ€” we can dig the trench as part of the job, or you can have it dug beforehand to keep costs down. We’ll discuss this when we quote so you know what to expect on the day.

It’s always worth letting your home insurer know about any significant work to your property โ€” including a garden office installation. As the work is certified under Part P, you’ll have the compliance documentation to provide them if asked.
