Outdoor electrics are one of the most commonly botched DIY jobs we come across. Surface-run cables, undersized flex, unprotected connections in junction boxes — we see it regularly on fault finding jobs across Bristol and South Gloucestershire.

We agree a fixed price before we start. For straightforward outdoor lighting jobs — a security light, a couple of garden spikes and a weatherproof socket — we can often quote over the phone or from photos. More complex garden schemes are quoted after a site visit.

It depends on the scope of the job — a single security light on an existing outdoor circuit is very different to a full garden lighting scheme with buried armoured cable, multiple circuits and smart controls. For straightforward jobs we can often quote from photos. For larger schemes we’ll carry out a site visit first. Get in touch and we’ll give you a fixed price before we start.
Any new outdoor circuit — including new cables from the consumer unit, new outdoor sockets or garden office power — is notifiable electrical work under Part P of the Building Regulations. It must be carried out by a registered electrician who can self-certify the work. We’re NICEIC Approved Contractors so all our work is self-certified and fully compliant.
For buried runs we use steel wire armoured (SWA) cable buried at the correct depth — 450mm under a garden, 600mm under a driveway. For surface runs we use appropriate conduit with twin and earth or SWA inside. We don’t use standard twin and earth outside — it’s not suitable and it’s not safe.
Yes — we install and configure smart outdoor lighting systems including Philips Hue, LIFX and other app and voice-controlled systems. We handle the electrical installation and make sure the system is properly configured and working before we leave.

In most cases no — standard domestic outdoor lighting doesn’t require planning permission. There are exceptions for listed buildings and some conservation areas. If you’re not sure we’ll flag it before we start.
